Provided is a diesel engine capable of achieving both a reduction in cooling loss and an improvement in a fuel spray and air mixing performance, by increasing a movement distance of fuel spray in a cavity without strengthening penetration of the fuel spray. A diesel engine (1) includes: a cylinder head (6) covering one end of a cylinder (2); a piston (10) which is provided with a crown surface (10a) facing the cylinder head and which reciprocates inside the cylinder; and a fuel injection valve (34) attached to the cylinder head. A cavity (12) which is recessed toward the side opposite to the cylinder head and which is circular in a plan view is formed in the crown surface of the piston. An injection hole (56) directed into the cavity is formed in the fuel injection valve. A wall surface forming the cavity includes a wall portion (64) which is formed in a position, on a peripheral edge of the cavity, away from the direction in which the injection hole is directed, and which projects toward the radially inner side of the piston, substantially parallel to a plane including a central axis of the piston.
