Abstract:
This disclosure relates to compression garments, specifically to compression garments to promote lymphatic circulation. The garments can include flow directing units that have one or more angled teeth, struts, and/or lattices. A compressive force applied to the outer surface of the garment can be translated through the one or more angled teeth, struts, and/or lattices to urge fluid within a user to flow in one or more directions.

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:

1. A garment configured to be worn by a user to promote lymphatic flow, the garment comprising: a plurality of flow directing units, each of the plurality of flow directing units comprising a wall and a plurality of teeth extending from the wall at an angle, the plurality of teeth configured to face skin of the user when the garment is worn; wherein the plurality of teeth are configured to translate a compressive force applied to the garment to promote fluid within the user to flow in a direction.

2. The garment of Claim 1 , wherein the plurality of teeth are in a repeating pattern.

3. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of teeth are in a repeating saw toothed pattern.

4. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of teeth are evenly distributed along the wall.

5. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the angle is acute.

6. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the angel is obtuse.

7. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of teeth include rounded ends.

8. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of teeth have a thickness that tapers to an end.

9. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of teeth have a thickness that is consistent.

10. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are made of a low durometer material.

11. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are made of foam.

12. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are made of plastic.

13. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are made of rubber.

14. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the garment comprises channels configured to receive the plurality of flow directing units to maintain an orientation of the plurality of flow directing units.

15. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are sewn into the garment.

16. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the garment is configured to be worn on an arm, leg, foot, hand, shoulder, trunk, head, and/or neck of the user.

17. The garment of any of the preceding claims, wherein the garment is configured to position the plurality of flow directing units to map to lymphatic vessels of the user.

18. The garment of any of the preceding claims, further comprising a bioimpedance sensing device configured to detect a volume of a region of a body of the user.

19. The garment of Claim 19, wherein the volume is tracked over time.

20. The garment of Claim 18 or 19, wherein the region of the body is an arm, leg, foot, hand, shoulder, trunk, head, and/or neck of the user.

21. The garment of any of Claims 18-20, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device is configured to communicate with a computing device.

22. The garment of any of Claims 18-21, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device comprises a sensor, microcontroller, wired and/or wireless communication interface, battery, and shell.

23. The garment of any of Claims 18-22, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device is configured to send and receive an electrical signal across the garment through a region of a body of the user.

24. The garment of any of the preceding claims, further comprising one or more vibration units configured to vibrate to promote lymphatic flow.

25. The garment of Claim 24, wherein the garment is configured to position the one or more vibration units at or proximate lymph nodes of the user.

26. A garment configured to be worn by a user to promote lymphatic flow, the garment comprising: a plurality of flow directing units, each of the plurality of flow directing units comprising a first wall, a second wall that is offset from the first wall, and a plurality of struts extending at an angle between the first wall and the second wall, the second wall configured to face skin of the user when the garment is worn; wherein the plurality of struts are configured to translate a compressive force applied to the garment to promote fluid within the user to flow in a direction.

27. The garment of Claim 26, wherein the plurality of struts are in a repeating pattern.

28. The garment of any of Claims 26 or 27, wherein the plurality of struts are evenly distributed.

29. The garment of any of Claims 26-28, wherein the plurality of struts are arranged at an acute angle relative to the first wall.

30. The garment of any of Claims 26-28, wherein the plurality of struts are arranged at an obtuse angle relative to the first wall.

31. The garment of any of Claims 26-30, further comprising a plurality of teeth.

32. The garment of Claim 31, wherein the plurality of teeth are disposed on the second wall.

33. The garment of Claims 31 or 32, wherein the plurality of teeth are in line with a central axis of the plurality of struts.

34. The garment of any of Claims 26-33, wherein the plurality of flow directing units are made of a low durometer material.

42. The garment of any of Claims 26-41, further comprising a bioimpedance sensing device configured to detect a volume of a region of a body of the user.

43. The garment of Claim 42, wherein the volume is tracked over time.

44. The garment of Claim 42 or 43, wherein the region of the body is an arm, leg, foot, hand, shoulder, trunk, head, and/or neck of the user.

45. The garment of any of Claims 42-44, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device is configured to communicate with a computing device.

46. The garment of any of Claims 42-45, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device comprises a sensor, microcontroller, wired and/or wireless communication interface, battery, and shell.

47. The garment of any of Claims 42-46, wherein the bioimpedance sensing device is configured to send and receive an electrical signal across the garment through a region of a body of the user.

48. The garment of any of Claims 42-47, further comprising one or more vibration units configured to vibrate to promote lymphatic flow.

49. The garment of any of Claims 48, wherein the garment is configured to position the one or more vibration units at or proximate lymph nodes of the user.

50. A garment configured to be worn by a user to promote lymphatic flow, the garment comprising: a flow directing unit comprising an inner wall, an outer wall offset from the inner wall, and a plurality of struts extending between and connecting to the inner wall and the outer wall, the plurality of struts comprising first struts and second struts, the first struts oriented in a first direction and the second struts oriented in a second direction different than the first direction; wherein the plurality of struts are configured to translate a force applied to the garment to promote fluid within the user to flow in one or more directions when the garment is worn by the user.

The garment of Claim 50, wherein each of the plurality of struts comprises a first portion connected to the inner wall, a second portion connected to the outer wall, and an intermediate portion connecting the first portion and the second portion, wherein the intermediate portion is angled relative to the inner wall.

52. The garment of any of Claims 50 and 51, wherein the first struts are oriented perpendicularly relative to the second struts.

53. The garment of any of Claims 50-52, wherein the first struts are oriented perpendicularly relative to the second struts in longitudinal directions of the first struts and the second struts.

54. The garment of Claim 51, wherein the second portions of the first struts and the second struts are connected.

55. The garment of any of Claims 51 and 54, wherein the first portion of one second strut of the second struts is disposed under the second portion of one first strut of the first struts, and wherein the second portion of the one second strut is connected to the second portion of a second first strut of the first struts.

56. The garment of any of Claims 50-55, wherein the plurality of struts are arranged at an acute angle relative to the inner wall.

57. The garment of any of Claims 50-55, wherein the plurality of struts are arranged at an obtuse angle relative to the inner wall.

58. The garment of any of Claims 50-57, further comprising a bioimpedance sensing device that is configured to communicate with a computing device.

A garment configured to be worn by a user to promote lymphatic flow, the garment comprising: a lattice structure; wherein the lattice structure is configured to translate a force applied to the garment to promote fluid within the user to flow in one or more directions when the garment is worn by the user.

64. The garment of Claim 63, wherein the lattice structure comprises a strut-based lattice.

65. The garment of any of Claims 63 and 64, wherein the lattice structure comprises a skeletal-triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) based lattice.

DIRECTIONAL FLOW COMPRESSION GARMENT

FIELD

[0002] This disclosure relates to compression garments, specifically to compression garments to promote lymphatic circulation.

BACKGROUND

[0003] Lymphedema is a medical condition in which excess fluid, such as lymph fluid, collects in the body. In some instances, this excess fluid may collect in a specific area of the body, such as a limb, and cause swelling (i.e., edema). Left untreated, numerous additional symptoms may occur such as infections, fatigue, restricted range of motion, hardening of the skin/tissue, etc.

SUMMARY

[0004] Lymphedema may be treated by promoting the drainage of fluid (e.g., lymph) from a region of the body. Disclosed herein are garments and related components (e.g., flow directing units) that promote the movement of fluid from an area of the body. For example, a garment, such as a sleeve, may be worn on a limb (e.g., arm, leg, hand, foot, etc.) of a user or any other portion of the body (e.g., torso, head, neck, etc.). The garment can include one or more flow directing units, which can also be referred to as garment inserts. The one or more flow directing units can include an elongate wall with a plurality of teeth extending therefrom. The plurality of teeth may extend at an angle relative to the elongate wall. The garment can be worn by a user to orient ends of the plurality of teeth toward the skin of the user. When worn, the plurality of teeth can provide a directional force when compressed to urge/promote fluid flow. When worn, a compressive force applied to the outside of the garment can be translated by the plurality of teeth to urge fluid disposed inside the user to flow in a predetermined direction based on the orientation of the plurality of teeth. In some instances, the garment can be worn by the user while the user sleeps such that the user’ s weight against a surface (e.g., bed) provides the compressive forces that are translated by the garment to urge fluid flow. The garment can include a bioimpedance sensing device to sense characteristics, such as volume, of the portion of the body wearing by the garment and/or a vibration unit to promote flow of fluid within the body.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0071] Although certain embodiments and examples are described below, this disclosure extends beyond the specifically disclosed embodiments and/or uses and obvious modifications and equivalents thereof. Thus, it is intended that the scope of this disclosure should not be limited by any particular embodiments described below. Furthermore, this disclosure describes many embodiments in reference to treating lymphedema, but as described herein, any embodiment and modifications or equivalents thereof should not be limited to treating lymphedema.

[0072] FIG. 1A illustrates a lymphatic system of a body 100 of a user. The lymphatic system is an organ system, which may be a separate and complete body system with its own functional contributions to the human body 100. The lymphatic system includes a network of lymphatic vessels or channels 102 and nodes 104, among other features, that help to recirculate blood and/or lymph through the human body. Lymph capillaries may anastomose with pre-collectors, collector vessels, which travel to lymph nodes 104, exit the nodes 104, converge with trunks which eventually merge into the largest lymph vessel — the thoracic duct. Lymphatics may originate from the mucous membranes, the soft connective tissue spaces, and dermis of the skin. Lymphatics may be positioned in close proximity to the blood capillary bed. As described herein, lymphedema is a medical condition in which excess fluid, such as lymph fluid, collects in an area of the body, such as a limb, and causes swelling (i.e., edema). Left untreated, numerous additional detrimental symptoms may develop.

In some variants, the garment incorporating the one or more flow directing units 200 can, when worn, orient the one or more teeth 202 such that compressive forces applied in the direction of arrow 204 are translated in a direction to direct flow away from the trunk of the user in a direction that is opposite arrow 206. In some variants, the garment, when worn, can orient the one or more flow directing units 200 to urge the flow of fluid within the body 100 of the user in any direction. The flow directing unit 200 can be varying lengths, widths, etc. The flow directing unit 200 can be made of a variety of materials, which can include foam, plastic, rubber, and/or other low durometer materials. The one or more teeth 202 may be oriented in different orientations to urge fluid (e.g., lymphatic fluid, interstitial fluid) to flow in any direction within the body of the user. For example, as illustrated in FIG. IB, the flow directing unit 200 may urge the flow of fluid in the direction of arrow 206 (e.g., linear towards the trunk of the user). The flow directing unit 200 may urge the flow of fluid in the direction of arrow 211 (e.g., spiral towards the trunk of the user). In some variants, fluid within the body of the user (e.g., lymphatic, interstitial fluid) may be urged away from the trunk of the user. The flow directing unit 200 may create different flows, which may at least include linear, spiral, double helical, random, others, and/or a combination of any of the forgoing to guide fluid (e.g., lymphatic fluid, interstitial) within the body of the user (e.g., toward the trunk). In normal micro-circulation, an increase in interstitial fluid pressure (or an increase of tissue fluid) may pull against the filaments, creating tension.
