A discharge lamp comprising a discharge lamp body (1) provided with a slender, translucent, air−tight container (1a), an internal electrode (1c) fixed to the inner one end thereof, and a discharge medium mainly consisting of a rare gas, and an external electrode (2) disposed on the outer peripheral surface of the container (1a). The external electrode (2), although biased to cover only halfway around the full periphery of the container (1a) in a first area (2a) within a specified forward distance from the tip end of the internal electrode (1c), is wound around the full periphery of the container (1a) in the remaining second area (2b). A fluorescent lamp having such a structure can restrict luminous flickering because a shrinking positive column occurring at light controlling is attracted to the first area of the external electrode (2).
