Abstract:
The present invention provides a dispersion stabilizer for suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound, which is reduced in the methanol content, while being also reduced in the amount of components that are insoluble in an aqueous solution. The present invention relates to a dispersion stabilizer for suspension polymerization of a vinyl compound, which contains a modified vinyl alcohol polymer that has: a content (X) of a structural unit of from 0.05% by mole to 2.0% by mole (inclusive), said structural unit being derived from (A) a derivative of an ethylenically unsaturated dicarboxylic acid; a saponification degree of from 65.0% by mole to 90.0% by mole (inclusive); a methanol content of 0.01% by mass or more but less than 3.0% by mass as determined by head space gas chromatography; and an amount of components, which are insoluble in an aqueous solution having a concentration of 5% by mass at 90°C, of 0.1 ppm or more but less than 2,000 ppm.
