[Problem] To provide a distance-measuring device and a distance-measuring method that are capable of measuring the distance from an opening of a reaction tube to granular solid matter filling the inside of the reaction tube in a simple and quick manner. [Solution] A distance-measuring device 10 comprises a measurement member 300 holding a length measuring instrument 100, and at least one rail member 200 (base member) on which the measurement member is movably disposed. An angle formed by a reference line and a straight line parallel to an axial direction D2 of each of a plurality of reaction tubes 910 arranged side-by-side along the reference line in the same plane is consistent between the plurality of reaction tubes, where the reference line is a straight line parallel to a direction of movement of the measurement member disposed on the base member. A measurement direction D1 of the length measuring instrument is parallel to the axial direction of each reaction tube when the measurement member is in position on the base member. The measurement member disposed on the base member is sequentially movable from a position P1 (P2) where distance measurement has been performed for one reaction tube to a position P2 (P3) where distance measurement is to be performed for another reaction tube.
