A document conveying device (9) comprising: a supply tray (44) in which documents are stacked; a discharge tray (43) which is provided below the supply tray (44); a feed roller (51) which feeds documents one at a time from the supply tray (44); a conveyance mechanism (35) which conveys documents fed from the supply tray (44) through a read position to the discharge tray (43); a raising/lowering mechanism (38) which raises and lowers the supply tray (44); a discharge tray document sensor (18) which detects the documents on the discharge tray (43); and a control unit (10) which, when a document is conveyed by the conveyance mechanism (35), controls the raising/lowering mechanism (38) such that the top surface of documents stacked in the supply tray (44) is pushed against the feed roller (51), wherein the control unit (10) controls the raising/lowering mechanism (38) such that in cases in which, at the time when the device is powered on, a document is not detected by the discharge tray document sensor (18), the supply tray (44) is lowered to a position below the position of said tray for cases in which a document is detected by the discharge tray document sensor (18).
