Provided is a drive device for an opening and closing body for a vehicle, this drive device being capable of stably operating a closer mechanism even if, when the opening and closing body is to be opened from a fully latched position, the full latching of the opening and closing body is prevented from being released. The aforementioned drive device for the opening and closing body for the vehicle comprises an opening and closing body which opens and closes an opening section of a vehicle body; a closer mechanism which, by being driven by a motor, moves the opening and closing body between a half-latched position and the fully latched position; a full latching release detection means for detecting full latching release of the opening and closing body; a pulse detection means for detecting pulses generated according to the rotation of a motor; and a driving control means for performing an operation wherein if the opening and closing body is to be opened from a fully latched position via the closer mechanism, then the motor is rotated in the reverse direction, resulting in the closer mechanism being returned to the initial position, provided that the full latching release detection means does not detect full latching release of the opening and closing body within a predetermined time after the motor starts normal rotation in the direction of releasing the opening and closing body, and that an abnormality occurs in a pulse detected by the pulse detection means.
