Abstract:
[Problem] To provide a polarizing element having favorable polarization properties, and having the characteristic of not changing in color due to pH resulting from a processing solution or an adhesive. [Solution] The polarizing element, which contains the disazo pigment represented by formula (1) and comprises a film of a polyvinyl alcohol resin that has been stretched by a factor of at least three from the initial length thereof or a derivative thereof, is characterized by the wavelength at which transmittance is the lowest being 565-700 nm of the transmittance when two polarizing plates having the polarizing element are overlapped in a manner such that the direction of the absorption axes thereof are perpendicular. (In the formula: R1 and R2 each independently indicate a sulfo group, an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, an alkoxy group having a sulfo group, a carboxy group, a nitro group, an amino group, or a substituted amino group; R3 indicates an alkyl group, an alkoxy group, a sulfo group, or an alkoxy group having a sulfo group; and X indicates a benzoyl group or a phenyl group that is unsubstituted or has 1-3 of at least one substituent group selected from the group consisting of a methyl group, an alkyl group, a hydroxyl group, an amino group, a sulfo group, and an alkoxy group.)
