Title:
AN EARPIECE AND A METHOD FOR DETECTING PHYSIOLOGICAL INFORMATION
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2019/223507
Kind Code:
A1
Abstract:
An earpiece which comprises a sensor for detecting light which has travelled through the tissue of an ear canal. The sensor is held in a cradle to reduce the field-of-view. The reduced field-of-view reduce the possibility of light reaching the sensor in a tangential angle. Therefore, ambient light and light from a emitter reaching the sensor is reduced. This improves the likelihood that the readings of the sensor has a greater portion from light that has travelled through the tissue of the ear canal than not. Furthermore, the earpiece is tailor-made to fit to the ear of a specific user. As the ear is not a symmetrical part of the body, the location of the earpiece is virtually repeatable each time the user wears the earpiece. This allows breaks in continual wearing of the earpiece while allowing the earpiece to monitor light which has travelled through the tissue of an ear canal in virtually the same position. Furthermore, the earpiece is preferably made of a nozzle containing the sensor, and an emitter, all encapsulated into a hard material which allows light to pass through. Using only one material reduced internal reflection when light travels from the emitter to the surface of the earpiece, thereby reducing signal noise and background. Typically, the earpiece also comprises a speaker such that the earpiece is able to function as an earphone.
