Description:
ELECTRIC CONNECTOR

Technical Field

This invention relates to an electric connector.

Background Art

Several electric connectors are known and are generally used to connect two or more electric cables.

The connectors of known type generally comprise a tail member adapted to house the electric cable and a head member that can be coupled to the tail member and provided with at least one connector element to which the electric cable must be connected in order to connect the latter to a connecting element.

In particular, the connecting element is generally another electric connector of the type complementary to the first one, so as to achieve a coupling of the male- female type between the two connectors, for example of the plug and socket type.

The tail member generally comprises a cable gland assembly adapted to prevent the cable from being pulled out of the connector and the head member comprises blocking means adapted to electrically connect the cable to the connector element.

In particular, the electric connectors of this type comprise an elastically deformable element to open and close a cable blocking point defined between the connector element and the elastically deformable element itself.

More in detail, this type of connector provides for an opening/closing procedure of the blocking point which is carried out by a specialized operator, who acts on the elastically deformable element by means of a special tool, such as e.g. a screwdriver, or by means of the pressure of the elastically deformable element by means of the cable itself, which is forced inside the blocking point.

This procedure, however, is not particularly practical and requires the operator to apply a significant force to the elastically deformable element that can deteriorate both the elastically deformable element and the cable itself.

To overcome these drawbacks, the blocking means of the electric connectors are provided with an actuation lever mounted on the head member or on the tail member and adapted to act on the elastically deformable element to open and close the blocking point.

This way, the actuation lever allows electrically connecting the cable to a corresponding connector element in a simple and easy manner without the need for tools and without the need to force the cable inside the blocking point.

This type of electric connector, however, is not free of drawbacks related to the mounting of the blocking means.

In fact, the electric connectors of this type comprise a plurality of recesses and grooves which are separate from each other and made on different portions of the tail member and/or of the head member so as to allow the mounting of all the components of the blocking means.

The connector element is generally assembled inside a first recess and the actuation lever is housed inside a second recess made substantially orthogonal to the first one.

In addition, the actuation lever very frequently has to be moved inside the second recess along several different directions of movement in order to open and close the blocking point.

For these reasons, the connectors of this type are particularly complicated to mount and make the assembly operations of the blocking means long and complicated.

Description of the Invention

The main aim of the present invention is to devise an electric connector that allows assembling the blocking means in a simple and fast manner.

Another object of the present invention is to devise an electric connector that allows overcoming the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art in a simple, rational, easy, effective to use and cost effective solution.

The aforementioned objects are achieved by the present electric connector having the characteristics of claim 1.

In a first embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 6, the head member 4 is a female type connection terminal, that is, the head member 4 comprises at least one input channel 7 inside which the connector element 29, 30 is housed and adapted to receive one connecting end 8 of the connecting element.

In fact, the words“connecting element” mean any type of connection terminal adapted to be connected to the connector element 29, 30.

In particular, in a different embodiment shown in Figure 8 and in Figure 9, the electric connector 1 comprises a male type head member provided with the connecting end 8 and coinciding with the connecting element that can be connected to the electric connector 1 shown in Figures 1 to 6.

Advantageously, the tail member 2 defines at least one insertion channel 46 inside which the cable 3 can be inserted and comprises a cable gland assembly 9 of known type and adapted to block the position of the cable itself inside the insertion channel 46.

Advantageously, the electric connector 1 comprises assembly means for assembling the blocking means 5, 6 to at least one of the tail member 2 and the head member 4 provided with:

at least one hollow body 10 made on one of the tail member 2 and the head member 4 and defining at least one housing 11 a, l lb of substantially elongated shape which extends longitudinally along a direction of assembly B, the connector element 29, 30, the elastically deformable element 5 and the actuation lever 6 being arranged in sequence inside the housing 1 la, l lb and extending longitudinally along the direction of assembly B;

at least one covering body 12 made on the other of the tail member 2 and the head member 4 which is coupleable to the hollow body 10 in a mounting configuration wherein the covering body 12 closes at least in part the housing 11 a, l lb, thus preventing the connector element 29, 30, the elastically deformable element 5 and the actuation lever 6 from moving along the direction of assembly B.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the hollow body 10 is formed on the head member 4 and the covering body 12 is separated from the tail member 2, which comprises at least one substantially hollow extreme portion 13 and defining at least one housing chamber 43 of the covering body 12, the covering body 12 being housed inside the housing chamber 43 and coupled to the hollow body 10 when the tail member 2 and the head member 4 are coupled by means of the union means 14, 15.

Alternative embodiments of the connector 1 cannot however be ruled out wherein the covering body 12 is made in a single body piece with one of the tail member 2 and the head member 4.

In addition, the tail member 2, the head member 4 and the covering body 12 have a cross section of substantially circular shape and the union means 14, 15 comprise at least one threaded portion 14 formed on one of the tail member 2 and the head member 4 and at least one female screw portion 15 formed on the other of the tail member 2 and the head member 4 and coupleable to the threaded portion 14.

In particular, the tail member 2 and the head member 4 have a substantially cylindrical conformation and the covering body 12 has a substantially discoidal conformation.

Alternative embodiments of the electric connector 1 cannot however be ruled out, wherein the tail member 2, the head member 4 and the covering body 12 have a cross section of different shape, e.g. of square or rectangular shape.

Conveniently, the electric connector 1 comprises coupling means for coupling the covering body 12 to the hollow body 10 provided with at least one recess 17 formed on one of the covering body 12 and the hollow body 10 and at least one relief 16 having a shape substantially complementary with respect to the recess 17 and insertable inside the latter in the mounting configuration.

In particular, the electric connector 1 comprises a plurality of reliefs 16 formed on the hollow body 10, and the covering body 12 comprises a coupling face 41 on which a plurality of recesses 17 are formed.

According to the embodiments shown in the figures, the recesses 17 and the reliefs 16 also have a substantially elongated shape to extend longitudinally substantially parallel with respect to the direction of assembly B.

Advantageously, the electric connector 1 comprises a plurality of passage channels 45 formed on the covering body 12.

In particular, the passage channels 45 have a substantially circular section and extend substantially parallel to the direction of assembly B, passing from side to side through the covering body 12.

In addition, each of the passage channels 45 is positioned facing at a housing l la, l lb.

The electric connector 1 also comprises fastening means for fastening the covering body 12 to the tail member 2 provided with:

at least one stop profile 18 having a substantially circular shape and radially associated with one of the tail member 2 and the covering body 12;

at least one abutment portion 19 abutting with the stop profile 18 formed on the other of the tail member 2 and the covering body 12;

the abutment portion 19 abutting against the stop profile 18 and the relief 16 being inserted inside the recess 17, blocking the position of the covering body 12 inside the housing chamber 43 when the threaded portion 14 and the female screw portion 15 are coupled to each other.

In particular, the covering body 12 comprises a fastening face 42 positioned substantially opposite to the coupling face 41 and on which are obtained a plurality of abutment portions 19 with a substantially elongated shape, to extend substantially parallel with respect to the direction of assembly B.

Advantageously, the stop profile 18 is a profile of the saw tooth type formed on the inner wall of the housing chamber and extending radially towards the inside of the tail member 2, as shown in Figure 6.

This way, when the threaded portion 14 and the female screw portion 15 are screwed together, the fastening face 42 moves in rotation inside the housing chamber 43 close to the stop profile 18 until the abutment portions 19 abut against the teeth of the stop profile 18, thus preventing the screwing of the threaded portion 14 and of the female screw portion 15.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the female screw portion 15 is formed on the inner wall of the extreme portion 13 of the tail member 2.

The threaded portion 14, on the other hand, is formed on the external surface of the head member 4 and comprises a plurality of extensions 20 positioned side by side in the proximity of the hollow body 10 to form around the latter a wall of substantially cylindrical shape.

In particular, the extensions 20 are spaced away from each other to define a plurality of openings 21 of substantially identical width, as shown in Figure 3. Conveniently, the hollow body 10 defines a plurality of housings 11 positioned radially on the covering body 12, i.e. positioned substantially in a circle side by side and equidistant from the center of the covering body 12.

In addition, each of the housings 11 is located at one of the openings 21.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the blocking means 5, 6 comprise a number of actuation levers 6, of connector elements 29, 30 and of elastically deformable elements 5, equal to the number of housings 11.

Consequently, everything is described with reference to an actuation lever 6, to a connector element 29, 30 and to an elastically deformable element 5 with respect to a corresponding housing 11 a, l lb is deemed valid for any actuation lever 6, connector element 29, 30, elastically deformable element 5 and for any housing l la, l lb.

In particular, an actuation lever 6, a connector element 29, 30 and an elastically deformable element 5 are shown for simplicity in some illustrations in order to make it easier to understand the view of the illustrations themselves. Advantageously, the assembly means comprise:

at least one guiding groove 22 formed inside the housing 11 a, l lb substantially parallel to the direction of assembly B and provided with at least one bottom wall 23;

at least one stop element 24 formed on the covering body 12 and slidably insertable inside the groove 22 in the mounting configuration.

In addition, the actuation lever 6 is provided with at least one pin 25 slidably insertable inside the groove 22 and fastened inside the latter between the bottom wall 23 and the stop element 24, the pin 25 being rotatable around the axis of rotation A and arranged substantially transverse to the direction of assembly B between the first work configuration and the second work configuration.

According to the embodiments shown in the figures, the assembly means comprise a pair of grooves 22 formed substantially parallel and opposite to each other inside each housing 1 la, l lb.

Advantageously, the actuation lever 6 comprises a pair of pins 25 positioned substantially opposite and parallel to each other to fit simultaneously inside a corresponding groove 22.

Consequently, the assembly means comprise a pair of stop elements 24 positioned substantially opposite and parallel to each other to fit simultaneously inside a pair of grooves 22 to block inside the latter a corresponding pair of pins 25.

Conveniently, the actuation lever 6 comprises a gripping portion 26 positioned at the opening 21 substantially placed between two extensions 20.

The housing l la, l lb advantageously comprises at least a first abutment element 27 arranged substantially transverse with respect to the direction of assembly B, and the covering body 12 comprises at least a second abutment element 28 arranged substantially transverse with respect to the direction of assembly B.

Furthermore, the connector element 29, 30 is fastened to the inside of the housing l la, l lb and abuts against the first and the second abutment element 27, 28 in the mounting configuration. In particular, the housing 11 a, l lb comprises at least a first housing stretch l la and at least a second housing stretch l lb communicating with each other, and the connector element 29, 30 comprises at least one connecting portion 29 having a shape substantially complementary with respect to the second housing stretch 1 lb and inserted inside the latter, and at least one coupling portion 30 to the elastically deformable element 5 having a shape substantially complementary with respect to the first housing stretch l la and arranged inside the latter, abutting against the first and the second abutment element 27, 28, the first housing stretch l la having a cross section substantially larger than that of the second housing stretch l lb.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the grooves 22 are formed inside the first housing stretch l la.

In addition, the first abutment element 27 is a wall substantially orthogonal to the direction of assembly B and defines the narrowing of width between the first and the second housing stretch l lb.

The second abutment element 28, on the other hand, is a protruding stretch made on the coupling face 41 of the covering body 12 and adapted to abut against the coupling portion 30.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the housing l la, l lb is open at the top at the opening 21.

In fact, the first housing stretch l la substantially has a transverse“U”-shaped section.

The second housing stretch 1 lb, on the other hand, has a substantially circular transverse section.

Advantageously, the coupling portion 30 comprises a substantially flat abutment wall 31, substantially rectangular in shape and positioned substantially orthogonal to the direction of assembly B.

In particular, the connecting portion 29 is substantially cylindrical in shape and is substantially associated with the center of the abutment wall 31 substantially orthogonal to the latter, as shown in Figure 6.

Advantageously, the elastically deformable element 5 comprises: at least one base stretch 32 having a substantially elongated shape;

at least one blocking stretch 44 having a substantially elongated shape and arranged substantially opposite to the base stretch 32;

at least one junction stretch 33 between the base stretch 32 and the blocking stretch 44 having a substantially curved shape and interposed between the base stretch 32 and the blocking stretch 44.

Advantageously, the elastically deformable element 5 is a sheet- shaped body made of an electrically conductive material, substantially rectangular in shape and shaped so as to define the base stretch 32, the blocking stretch 44 and the junction stretch 33.

In addition, the elastically deformable element 5 is coupled to the coupling portion 30 of the connector element 29, 30.

In particular, the coupling portion 30 comprises at least one pair of coupling stretches 34 arranged inside the first housing stretch l la substantially parallel and opposite to each other, and the elastically deformable element 5 is interposed between the coupling stretches 34.

Furthermore, the base stretch 32 is arranged in support with one of the coupling stretches 34 and the blocking stretch 44 is arranged stopped to abut against the other of the coupling stretches 34 to define the blocking point.

Advantageously, the coupling stretches 34 are straight stretches of a substantially flat shape, associated with the abutment wall 31 and defining with the latter a housing volume of the elastically deformable element 5.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the blocking stretch 44 is positioned substantially transverse with respect to the base stretch 32.

This way, when the elastically deformable element 5 is positioned inside the housing volume, the blocking stretch 44 is positioned substantially inclined starting from the junction stretch 33 as far as abutting against the coupling stretch 34.

In other words, contrary to what happens with the base stretch 32 which completely faces the other coupling stretch 34, only one portion of the blocking stretch 44 is in contact with the coupling stretch 34. In addition, the elastically deformable element 5 is positioned inside the coupling volume with the junction stretch 33 substantially opposite to the abutment wall 31, i.e., the blocking stretch 44 is folded on the base stretch 32 substantially towards the inside of the housing volume, as shown in Figure 5. The coupling portion 30 conveniently comprises at least one intermediate stretch 35 arranged substantially opposite and parallel to the coupling stretches 34 and defining with one of these a slot 36 adapted to receive the base stretch 32.

In particular, the base stretch 32 is arranged inside the slot 36 enclosed between the coupling stretch 34 and the intermediate stretch 35.

In addition, the elastically deformable element 5 comprises at least one pair of side stretches 40 arranged substantially parallel and opposite to each other and associated substantially orthogonal to the base stretch 32, abutting laterally the intermediate stretch 35.

Advantageously, the intermediate stretch 35 is associated with the abutment wall 31 and is arranged at a distance from one of the coupling stretches 34 to define the slot 36.

According to the embodiments shown in the illustrations, the blocking means 5, 6 comprise at least one shaped profile 37 made on the actuation lever 6 in the proximity of the pin 25 and arranged in contact with the blocking stretch 44, in the first work configuration the actuation lever 6 being rotated around the axis of rotation A in a direction of rotation for charging the elastically deformable element 5 and the shaped profile 37 pressing on the blocking stretch 44 and moving it away from the coupling stretch 34 to open the blocking point, and in the second work configuration the actuation lever 6 being rotated around the axis of rotation A in a direction of rotation for releasing the charge of the elastically deformable element 5 and the shaped profile 37 being moved away from the blocking stretch 44 which comes close to the coupling stretch 34 to block the cable 3 at the blocking point.

In particular, the blocking means 5, 6 comprise a pair of shaped profiles 37 acting on a lateral side of the blocking stretch 44 respectively. In addition, the actuation lever 6 is positioned substantially transverse to the direction of assembly when it is in the first work configuration and is positioned substantially parallel to the direction of assembly B to occupy the opening 21 when it is in the second work configuration.

A further embodiment of the connector 1 is shown in Figure 7, in which the blocking means 5, 6 comprise at least one protrusion 38 for anchoring the elastically deformable element 5 to the connector element 29, 30 formed on one of the base stretch 32 and the coupling stretch 34 and at least one hole 39 formed on the other of the base stretch 32 and the coupling stretch 34 and adapted to accommodate the protrusion 38 so as to fasten the elastically deformable element 5 to the coupling portion 30.

In particular, in this embodiment, the coupling portion 30 is without the intermediate stretch 35 and the elastically deformable element 5 is without the side stretches 40.

In fact, the coupling between the elastically deformable element 5 and the coupling portion 30 is made by means of the protrusion 38 inserted inside the hole 39.

In particular, the protrusion 38 is an inclined stretch formed on the base stretch 32 and folded towards the latter substantially towards the outside of the housing volume.

This way, the elastically deformable element 5 opposes the traction towards the outside of the housing volume by means of the protrusion 38, which abuts against the side walls of the hole 39.

Alternative embodiments of the connector 1 cannot however be ruled out, wherein the elastically deformable element 5 comprises both the protrusion 38 and the side stretches 40 and wherein the coupling portion 30 comprises both the intermediate stretch 35 and the hole 39.

It has in practice been found that the described invention achieves the intended objects.

In particular, it should be underlined that the use of the assembly means provided with a housing capable of accommodating the contact element, the elastically deformable element and the actuation lever longitudinally along the same axis of assembly significantly simplifies the assembly of the blocking means.
