Provided is an electric motor drive device in which a smoothing capacitor can be prevented from being damaged by an induced voltage associated with the rotation of a motor. The electric motor drive device comprises: a smoothing capacitor (60) for smoothing the voltage of a battery (120); an inverter (70) to which the voltage smoothed by the smoothing capacitor (60) is applied and which controls the drive of a motor (55); a voltage sensor (110) for detecting the voltage of the smoothing capacitor (60); and a transmission control unit (controller (130) and transmission controller (140)) for calculating the fluctuation value of the voltage detected by the voltage sensor (110) and for, when the fluctuation value of the voltage is a predetermined value or more, controlling the transmission gear ratio of a transmission (30) so as to reduce the rotation speed of the motor (55). The transmission gear ratio is controlled to, for example, a transmission gear ratio of Gr2 with which the induced voltage of the motor (55) becomes less than the breakdown value of the smoothing capacitor (60).
