Abstract:
This electric power conversion device (200) comprises: a rectifier (3) that rectifies first AC electric power supplied from a commercial electric power supply (1); a smoothing capacitor (5) that is connected to the output end of the rectifier (3); an inverter (30) that is connected to both ends of the smoothing capacitor (5), the inverter (30) generating second AC electric power and outputting the generated second AC electric power to a motor (7); and a control device (100) that computes a load torque of the motor (7) while controlling the operation of the inverter (30) to control the speed of the motor (7). The electric power conversion device (200) is applied to a refrigeration cycle application device (900) provided with an outdoor heat exchanger (910), an outdoor fan (914), and the motor (7). The control device (100) has a threshold value that increases in accordance with any increase in the rotation speed of the outdoor fan (914). If a load torque that corresponds to the rotation speed of the outdoor fan (914) becomes equal to or greater than the threshold value, which is set in accordance with the rotation speed of the outdoor fan (914), the control device (100) determines that a defrosting operation is to be carried out on the outdoor heat exchanger (910).
