Abstract:
An electric-vehicle controller (10) and method for balancing the charge states of batteries in an electric vehicle (1) are provided. The electric vehicle controller (10) is configured to control power provided to a front electric motor (17) driving a front wheel of an electric vehicle (1) and a rear electric motor (18) driving a rear wheel of the electric vehicle (1), the front electric motor (17) being powered by a first battery (15) and the rear electric motor (18) being powered by a second battery (16) separate from the first battery. The electric-vehicle controller (10) is further configured to provide greater power from the first battery (15) to the front motor (17) than from the second battery (16) to the second motor (18) if the electric-vehicle controller (10) determines that the charge state of the first battery (15) is a predetermined amount lower than the charge state of the second battery (16) and that the electric vehicle (1) meets at least one predetermined driving characteristic, such that the first battery charge state reduces more quickly than the second battery charge state to balance the charge states of the first battery (15) and second battery (16).
