Title:
ELECTRO-OPTICAL APPARATUS AND METHODS FOR UPSTREAM ALIGNMENT OF CABLE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO/2014/145761
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
An HFC cable communications system includes an optical node having an upstream optical transmitter, coupled to an RF hardline cable plant via an upstream RF port and one or more RF attenuators. Upstream RF signals constituting an upstream channel plan for the hardline plant serve as input signals to the upstream optical transmitter, which outputs a modulated optical carrier. The upstream optical transmitter's dynamic range and operating point (e.g., input composite power or power spectral density) are based on an information transfer characteristic (e.g., noise power ratio) and a representative value for a target criterion (e.g., carrier-to-noise ratio) for the upstream channel plan to facilitate sufficiently error-free transmission of upstream information from subscribers. A value of the RF attenuator(s) is particularly selected to adjust the RF power applied to the upstream optical transmitter and thereby prevent the transmitter's output from causing excessive distortion and possible corruption of the upstream information.
