In a discharge surface treatment, wherein a pulse discharge is generated between a formed electrode manufactured by forming a metal powder, a metal compound powder or a ceramic powder and a work, and a coating film comprising the material of the electrode or a substance formed by the reaction of the material of the electrode due to the discharge energy is formed on the surface of the work by the energy of the discharge, an electrode for the discharge surface treatment is manufactured by a step of incorporating a metal powder, a metal compound powder or a ceramic powder into a liquid of water or an organic solvent added with a dispersing agent, to form a powder mixed with a liquid, a step of pouring said mixed powder in a mold, and removing said liquid through vaporization or the absorption into the mold, to form a powder formed article, and a step of heating said powder formed article to a temperature at which electroconductivity is imparted to the formed article.
