Title:
ELECTRODE AND ELECTROCHEMICAL CELL FOR WATER PURIFICATION
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2001087776
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
An electrode (10) with large active surface area is made by winding a Ti-fiber tow (24) around a rectangular Ti-plate (20), and an electrocatalytic coating of three layers is applied. A precoat (12) comprising a mixture of iridium dioxide and tantalum pentoxide is applied using a solution of the hydrochloric acid with nitric acid added to inhibit corrosion of the metal. A sealing coat (14) is then applied, comprising tin dioxide doped with antimony, to improve adhesion of the final oxide coat to the precoat. The third (16) and final coat (18) comprises particles of titanium dioxide doped with Nb+4, cemented with titanium dioxide doped with antimony. Anodes of this description are assembled together with corrosion resistant cathodes (60) in an alternating sequence, with a separator (62) placed between the anodes and cathodes to prevent short circuiting.
