Abstract:
An electrode rod for spark deposition; a process for the production thereof; and a process for covering by spark deposition. The electrode rod is a rodlike compact of a close powder mixture comprising a first powder component containing at least one metal element selected from the group consisting of Fe, Co, Ni, Group 4a, 5a and 6a elements of the periodic table and Si and a second powder component capable of forming a carbide, nitride, boride, silicide or intermetallic compound through the combustion reaction with the metal element. The spark discharge between the electrode rod and a substrate makes the first and second components transfer to the surface of the substrate, by which the substrate can be covered with at least one layer containing the above compound. The spark deposition process with the electrode rod permits the saving of electrical discharge energy in spark deposition by virtue of the heat of the combustion reaction.
