Abstract:
Compounds which have simple structures and are easy of preparation and which have the ability to accept an electron and can be self-assembled to form monolayers easily. The compounds are represented by the general formula (I): A - Sp - X (I) wherein A is (i) an aromatic heterocyclic group bearing at least one member selected from the group consisting of cyano, C1-6 alkoxycarbonyl, and C1-11 acyl either on the ring or in a state attached to the ring through a conjugated system or (ii) an electron-accepting functional group to which at least one aromatic hydrocarbon ring is fused; Sp is a divalent connecting group containing an arylene group and/or an alkylene group; and X is a binding group capable of making a connection to a metal surface, a metal oxide surface, or a semiconductor surface by a covalent or coordinate bond.
