Disclosed is an electron-emitting material having excellent electron emission characteristics. Also disclosed are a method for producing such an electron-emitting material, and an electron emitter. Specifically disclosed is a method for producing an electron-emitting material containing a carbon material obtained by firing a polymer film. In this method, a polyamide acid solution wherein at least one metal compound selected from metal oxides and metal carbonates is dispersed is prepared; a film is formed from the thus-prepared polyamide acid solution and then imidated, thereby forming a polyimide film containing the metal compound; and a carbon material is obtained by firing the thus-formed polyimide film. An electron-emitting material contains such a carbon material whose surface is provided with a projection having a recess in the surface, and this projection contains a metal element.
