Abstract:

Provided is a W/O emulsion that can be used to manufacture a foam via polymerization, wherein said W/O emulsion emulsifies well and exhibits excellent static storage stability even without the aggressive addition of an emulsifier or the like. Also provided is a novel foam whereby the size of spherical bubbles therein can be precisely controlled; in particular, said spherical bubbles have a small mean diameter and said foam can exhibit sufficient strength. Further provided is a functional foam, containing a foam such as the aforementioned foam, to which various functionality has been added. This W/O emulsion contains a continuous oil-phase component and a water-phase component that is immiscible therewith, wherein said continuous oil-phase component contains a hydrophilic polyurethane polymer and an ethylene unsaturated monomer, said hydrophilic polyurethane polymer contains polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene units derived from polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene glycol, and said polyoxyethylene-polyoxypropylene units comprise 5-25% polyoxyethylene by weight. This foam, which contains a hydrophilic polyurethane polymer, has an interconnecting cell structure in which there are through-holes between adjacent spherical bubbles, the mean diameter of the spherical bubbles being less than 20 µm, the mean diameter of the through-holes being 5 µm or less, and the surface of said foam having surface pores with a mean diameter of 20 µm or less. The abovementioned functional foam contains this foam.
