The present invention provides an endoscope with an extremely small diameter, which is designed to be easier to handle when the endoscope insertion part is introduced into a root canal or a periodontal pocket, and is endowed with a function to protect the endoscope insertion part from damage when the endoscope insertion part is not introduced into said sites. This endoscope with an extremely small diameter comprises: an endoscope body (2) provided with a distal end nozzle (11); an imaging unit (4) provided within the endoscope body (2); an endoscope insertion part (12), the proximal side of which is connected to the imaging unit (4) and which extends through the distal end nozzle (11) so that the protruding end side thereof approaches the root canal (22) of a tooth (21) or a periodontal pocket (24); and a means (6) for inserting the endoscope insertion part, which brings an end part of the distal end nozzle (11) into contact with an area near a site to be observed of the root canal (22) of the tooth (21) or the periodontal pocket (24) so as to allow the endoscope insertion part (12) to be inserted into the site to be observed.
