A reverse-rotation starting operation, in which a crankshaft is rotated in the reverse direction and subsequently rotated in the forward direction, is performed when starting an engine. In the reverse-rotation starting operation: when the crank angle is in a starting air-intake range during rotation of the crankshaft in the reverse direction, and/or when the crank angle is in a normal air-intake range during rotation of the crankshaft in the forward direction, a fuel injection device injects fuel such that a fuel-air mixture passes through an air-intake port from an air-intake passage and is introduced into a combustion chamber; and an ignition device ignites the fuel-air mixture in the combustion chamber when the crank angle is in a starting ignition range. Before a piston reaches the initial compression top dead centre during rotation of the crankshaft in the forward direction in the reverse-rotation starting operation, in cases when the rotation state detected by a rotation-state detection unit does not satisfy predetermined starting conditions, an engine unit is controlled such that the reverse-rotation starting operation is performed again.
