An engine with variable stroke characteristics comprises links (60, 61) for connecting a piston (11) to a crankshaft (30), a control member (65) so mounted on an engine body as to be displaceable in both directions in a predetermined range, a control link (63) for connecting either one of the links to the control member, and an actuator (AC) for changing the position of the control member. The actuator includes a ratchet mechanism that utilizes a force transmitted from the piston to the control member as a drive force for the control member so that a power generation means for rotationally driving a control shaft can be simplified. The engine further inxcludes spring members (73, SP, 121) for imparting biasing forces to the control member are provided, thereby providing proper drive forces in both directions acting on the control member.
