Abstract:
An engine having: a piston (10) in which a cavity (11) is formed; a cylinder head (40) configured so as to form a pent roof type combustion chamber (30); a fuel injection valve (3) that injects fuel in the interval from the second half of the compression stroke to the first half of the expansion stroke; and spark plugs (4) arranged at positions corresponding to the area above the cavity of the piston. Multiple injection openings (27) are arranged in the circumferential direction surrounding the longitudinal axis of the fuel injection valve, and are formed such that, when the compression top dead center of the combustion chamber is divided into multiple fuel injection regions located in the injection direction of the injection openings by means of vertical planes extending from the longitudinal axis of the fuel injection valve in the radial direction of the air cylinder and passing through the midpoint between adjacent injection openings, the opening area of the injection openings increases as the size of the fuel injection regions located in the injection direction of the injection openings increases.
