Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing an epoxy resin having exceptional storage stability and curability when a low-activity catalyst is used and at low temperature, and also having exceptional corrosion resistance and coating film finish when made into a coating. The present invention also addresses the problem of providing an aqueous dispersion in which the epoxy resin or a modified form thereof is dispersed in an aqueous medium, an amino-group-containing epoxy resin obtained by reacting the epoxy resin with an amine compound, and a cationic electrodeposition coating that includes the amino-group-containing epoxy resin. Provided as a solution is an epoxy resin obtained by reacting at least a compound having one or more epoxy groups and a compound having a functional group that reacts with epoxy groups, wherein the epoxy resin satisfies conditions (I) and/or (II): (I) the compound having a functional group that reacts with the epoxy resin includes a trivalent or higher phenolic compound and/or a trifunctional or higher polyisocyanate; (II) the average degree of polyfunctionalization (X1) per molecule of epoxy resin represented by formula (1) (formula (1): average degree of polyfunctionalization (X1)=[number of terminals per molecule of epoxy resin]−2) is 0.30 or higher.
