Abstract:
Techniques for transmitting and receiving carrier-less amplitude and phase modulated signals are disclosed. In one aspect, a method of receiving a digital optical communication is disclosed. The method includes digitizing a received optical signal, applying a first equalizer to the digitized signal, applying a matched filter to the first equalized signal, applying a second equalizer to the match filtered signal, and direct detecting the second equalized signal to determine output data. The first equalizer may be a nonlinear equalizer such as a Volterra equalizer. The second equalizer may be a nonlinear equalizer such as a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) Volterra equalizer.
