Abstract:
Provided is an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer that has an ethylene unit content of 1 mol% or more and less than 15 mol%, a saponification degree of 85 mol% or more and less than 99.9 mol%, and a viscosity average polymerization degree of 200 or more and less than 3000, wherein the copolymer has a molecule including a structure (I) and a molecule including a structure (II) at a terminal; and the total content of the structure (I) and the structure (II) is 0.001 mol% or more and less than 0.1 mol% relative to the total monomer units and the molar ratio R [I/(I+II)] of the structure (I) to the total of the structure (I) and the structure (II) satisfies the formula (1). The ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer has excellent water solubility, and has excellent water-resistant adhesiveness and high-speed coating properties when used as an adhesive. [In the formula (I), Y is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.] [In the formula (II), Z is a hydrogen atom or a methyl group.] (1) R < 0.92 - Et/100 [In the formula (1), Et is the ethylene unit content (mol%).]
