Abstract:
An exhaust air cleaning apparatus comprising an NOx storage catalyst (36) and
an HC-supply means (48) for supplying an HC to the exhaust air that flows into the
NOx storage catalyst (36). The HC is supplied in an amount required for maintaining
the NOx storage catalyst (36) at a second temperature which is determined by subtracting
the temperature rise caused by rich spike from a first temperature which is previously
specified as a temperature necessary for the S purge from the NOx storage catalyst
(36) by controlling the HC-supply means (48) to thereby rise the temperature
of the NOx storage catalyst (36), the S purge by rich spike is initiated, and then
rich spike is continued to perform with allowing for a margin for the supplied
HC while supplying the HC.
