An exhaust brake controller for a compressed natural gas engine of the invention comprises fuel shut-off valves (13, 17) mounted between a CNG cylinder G and a mixer (11), an opening and closing valve (20) mounted on an air bypass passage (19) provided in an intake system (9), and a controller U for closing the fuel shut-off valves (13, 17) and opening the opening and closing valve (20) prior to operation of an exhaust brake valve (8). Also, the exhaust brake controller for an engine of the invention comprises stop means for stopping supplying of fuel on the basis of an exhaust brake actuating signal, an oxygen concentration sensor (129) provided on an exhaust pipe (105), and a controller (126) for actuating an actuator (128) of an exhaust shutter (127) after it is detected on the basis of a signal from the oxygen concentration sensor (129) that oxygen in an exhaust gas has reached a concentration out of an inflammable range.
