Abstract:
A method and apparatus for processing exhaust gas of internal combustion engines, in a manner favorable to noise attenuation and clean emissions. The apparatus (18) is characterized by turbine blades (70.1, 70.2, 70.3, 70.4, 110, 133, 134) in a chamber (26, 64) through which the exhaust gases pass, able to rotate freely and impart a centrifugal component of velocity to the gases. The blades (70.1, 70.2, 70.3, 70.4, 110, 133, 134)cause centrifugal sep aration of particles (especially carbon particles) from the gas stream and a degree of noise attenuation. Further noise attenuation is provided by elastically mounted perforated plates (80, 119, 135) located in the chamber (24, 64) providing viscous absorption of impulse and wave energy at sonic frequencies. A Venturi (92) effect is also used in the chamber (24, 64).
