Abstract:

Catalyst (3) capable of NOX elimination and NOX adsorbent (4) capable of adsorbing of NOX contained in an exhaust gas are disposed in sequence from upstream in exhaust passageway (2) of engine (1). After engine startup, NOX contained in the exhaust gas is adsorbed by the NOX adsorbent (4) until activation of the catalyst (3). Any NOX adsorbed by the NOX adsorbent (4) is dissolved away by a solvent fed from injector (7). The solvent containing the NOX dissolved away is sprayed from injector (11) after activation of the catalyst (3), and the NOX contained in the sprayed solvent is eliminated by the catalyst (3).
