Abstract:
In an internal combustion engine, a hydrocarbon supply valve (15) and an exhaust treatment catalyst (13) are disposed in an engine exhaust passage. A coating layer comprising at least two layers, an upper coating layer (46) and a lower coating layer (47), is formed on the base (45) of the exhaust treatment catalyst (13). The upper coating layer (46) comprises an exhaust purification catalyst for reacting NOx contained in exhaust gas with a reformed hydrocarbon, and the lower coating layer (47) comprises a NOx adsorption catalyst. The concentration of the hydrocarbon flowing through the exhaust treatment catalyst (13) is oscillated within a predetermined amplitude range and within a predetermined cycle range, thereby reducing on the exhaust purification catalyst (46) the NOx contained in the exhaust gas and the NOx separated from the NOx adsorption catalyst (47).
