Abstract:
In the present invention, a particulate filter disposed within an engine exhaust pathway is provided with: an exhaust gas inflow pathway and an exhaust gas outflow pathway disposed in alternation; and a porous partition wall that partitions the exhaust gas inflow pathway and the exhaust gas outflow pathway from each other. In the partition wall, a coated region at which the substrate surface is covered by a coating layer of which the average pore size is smaller than the average pore size of the partition wall substrate, and a non-coated region at the downstream side of the coated region and at which the substrate surface is not covered by the coating layer are demarcated, and in the non-coated region, ash contained in the exhaust gas can pass through the partition wall. When the amount of particulate matter collected at the non-coated region is calculated and it is determined that the amount of particulate matter collection exceeds an allowable upper limit, PM elimination control is performed for eliminating particulate matter from the particulate filter.
