Abstract:

A catalytic converter for reducing and purifying NOx in exhaust gas is provided with a carrier. An ammonia adsorbing material is coated on that portion of the carrier which is on the exhaust inlet side and has a predetermined length, and a NOx reducing catalyst is coated on that remaining portion of the carrier which is on the exhaust outlet side. Also, a first layer in which an ammonia adsorbing material and a NOx reducing catalyst are contained in a mixed state and a second layer in which a hydrolytic catalyst is contained are coated in that order on the surface of the carrier of the catalytic converter. In a transitional phase during operation of an engine, NOx is reduced and purified using ammonia adsorbed on the ammonia adsorbing material.
