Abstract:
The present invention is applied to an exhaust system comprising: a three-way catalyst (21) and a NOx catalyst (22) that are provided to an exhaust passage (20) of an engine (10), experience the adhesion thereto of sulfur components within an exhaust gas, and purge the adhered sulfur components using rich components within the exhaust gas; and NOx sensors (26, 27) that are provided on the downstream side of these catalysts (21, 22). The NOx sensors (26, 27) are limiting current-type sensors. The existence of a sulfur purge state, in which the sulfur components are purged from the three-way catalyst (21) and the NOx catalyst (22), is determined. If it has been determined that the sulfur purge state exists, a reaction suppression process is performed to suppress a reaction between oxygen and the sulfur components at a pump cell electrode (45) and a monitor cell electrode (47) of the NOx sensors (26, 27).
