Description:
AN EXTENDABLE RESTING UNIT Field of the Invention

The present invention relates to an extendable resting unit which is used for resting purposes in vehicles and which is extended to provide a more comfortable resting space in case of resting.

Background of the Invention

Heavy commercial vehicles are driven long distances due to their purpose of use and the drivers need to rest in the vehicle by stopping at resting stations or safe areas. For this purpose, there are bunks provided in the vehicles which enable them to rest without getting out of the vehicle. Vehicle sizes are limited by legal regulations and the area to be used in the cabin for driving and as living space is limited. The vehicle cabin is equipped with equipment such as an adjustable seat, steering wheel, etc. which are suitably ergonomic for driving comfort and which enable people of different heights to find comfortable and safe driving positions; and comfort of the driver during resting time is also taken care of. For this purpose, it is aimed to provide the largest possible bunk area for use of the driver.

The fixed or variable bunk area, which is used in the vehicles manufactured today, is in interaction with the other movable equipment in the cabin (such as the seat, storage area, etc.), and limits the size of the area to be used for the bunk due to the limited cabin size. In order to solve this problem, while the bunk area can be enlarged when the seats are in forward or reclined position by using moveable bunk mechanisms, the bunk can be folded when not used thereby preventing it from occupying space in the cabin by means of collapsible bunk solutions. However, in cases where the seats are moved close to the steering wheel thereby increasing the bunk area as well as where the bunk is opened upon reclining the seats, use of the driver's seat or front passenger seat is not possible. Thus, it is not possible for the driver to drive the vehicle when someone is resting at the bunk area when the bunk is opened wide.

German patent document no. DE3814537 Al, an application known in the state of the art, discloses a bunk which is folded when not used and thus does not occupy space in the deriver's cab. However, the method of extending the bunk area and the material of the mattress in this document are different.

Objectives of the Invention

The objective of the present invention is to provide an extendable resting unit which is downsized when not used thereby providing a wider space for the driver and the passenger, and which, when it is used, provides a wider and more comfortable resting area.

Another objective of the present invention is to provide an extendable resting unit which is extended by being partially moved.

A further objective of the present invention is to provide an extendable resting unit whose area of use can be increased by more inexpensive methods.

Another objective of the present invention is to provide an extendable resting unit which, when not extended, acts as a back rest at the rear wall of the cabin.

A further objective of the present invention is to provide an extendable resting unit which, even when extended, allows the driver to drive. Summary of the Invention

The present invention relates to an extendable resting unit which is used for resting purposes in vehicles and is extended to provide a more comfortable resting space in case of resting, and which is extended independent of the driver's seat and allows the driver to drive the vehicle when in extended position.

Detailed Description of the Invention

An extendable resting unit developed to fulfill the objective of the present invention is illustrated in the accompanying figures, in which:

Figure 1. is a perspective view of the extendable resting unit.

Figure 2. is a top view of the extendable resting unit.

Figure 3. is a top view of the extendable resting unit when in use.

Figure 4. is a top view of the extendable resting unit.

The components shown in the figures are given reference numbers as follows:

1. Extendable resting unit

2. Resting unit

2.1. Extension

2.2. Recess

3. Rotation mechanism

4. Extending member

4.1. Handle

5. Extending mechanism

A. Driver's seat

B. Passenger seat An extendable resting unit (1), which is used for resting purposes in vehicles and which is extended to provide a more comfortable resting space in case of resting, basically comprises

at least one resting unit (2) which can be extended in case of resting,

- at least one rotation mechanism (3) which enables the resting unit (2) to be rotated in an angular manner around a point,

at least one extending member (4) which is adapted to extend the resting unit (2),

at least one extending mechanism (5) which enables the resting unit (2) to be extended by moving the extending member (4).

In one embodiment of the invention, the extendable resting unit (1) has a resting unit (2) which is located behind the driver's seat (A) and the passenger seat (B) in the cabin. When the resting unit (2) is not used, it can be folded, and when the resting unit (2) is folded, the cabin space is enlarged thus the driver's seat (A) and the passenger seat (B) can be brought to a more ergonomic and comfortable position. The resting unit (2) includes an extension (2.1) extending between the driver's seat (A) and the passenger seat (B). The extension (2.1) preferably serves as an arm rest in order for the driver and the passenger to enjoy a more comfortable ride. The resting unit (2) includes a recess (2.2) behind the driver's seat (A), and this recess (2.2) enables movement control when the resting unit (2) is being extended. A rotation mechanism (3), which enables to rotate the resting unit (2) around a point, is provided at the part of the resting unit (2) remaining behind the driver's seat (A). The rotation mechanism (3) is used for rotating the resting unit (2) in case of resting. The rotation mechanism (3) provides a specific amount of rotational movement to the resting unit (2). In case of resting, the passenger seat (B) is brought to a suitable position and the end of the resting unit (2) located near the passenger seat (B) is somewhat rotated in an angled manner by the rotation mechanism (3). Thus, the end of the resting unit (2) located near the passenger seat (B) comes over the reclined passenger seat (B). In this embodiment of the invention, the resting unit (2) is moved manually. The recess (2.2) located behind the driver's seat (A) performs distance adjustment, and when the resting unit (2) contacts the back of the driver's seat (A) the movement ceases. When the resting unit (2) moves in an angled manner around a point, an empty space is formed between the cabin rear wall and the resting unit (2). Upon movement of the resting unit (2), the extending member (4) located on the cabin rear wall is moved by the help of the extending mechanism (5) and placed in the said empty area, and thus the resting unit (2) is extended. When the resting unit (2) is being extended by the extending member (4), the extending member (4) fits into the empty area remaining between resting unit (2) and the cabin rear wall. Lowering and lifting of the extending member (4), which is used for extending the resting unit (2), is facilitated by means of the handle (4.1) provided on the extending member (4). The extending member (4) is easily held and moved by the help of the handle (4.1). When the extending member (4) is not being used, it remains fixed on the cabin rear wall and does not move upon acceleration of the vehicle. While the resting unit (2) can be used without being extended, it can be extended if preferred. When the resting unit (2) is used without being extended, the extending member (4) serves as a backrest. In this embodiment of the invention, the extending member (4) is preferably a hinge system. In another embodiment of the invention, upon movement of the resting unit (2), the empty area remaining between the resting unit (2) and the cabin rear wall is preferably used as a section for storing objects.

In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the resting unit (2) is preferably moved automatically by electric, hydraulic or pneumatic systems.

In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the extending member (4) is preferably moved automatically by electric, hydraulic or pneumatic systems. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, movement of the resting unit (2) is realized automatically synchronized with bringing the passenger seat (B) to the suitable position. In another preferred embodiment of the invention, the extending member (4) comprises warning lights or an information display wherein the vehicle information will be displayed. The extending member (4) includes thereon controls for in-cabin and vehicle illumination, music-entertainment-information system, air-conditioning /ventilation system, electric or fuel cabin heater, engine block heater.

By using the extendable resting unit (1), a resting unit (2) which can be extended in case of resting is provided in the vehicle cabin. When using the extendable resting unit (1), the driver can drive the vehicle even if the resting unit (2) is extended. The extendable resting unit (1) can be used in all fixed or movable housings, rooms, control centers, camp equipment, and movable accommodation and sheltering vehicles besides the vehicles.
