Abstract:
The present invention addresses the problem of providing an artificial liver using highly functional hepatocytes. Provided is an extracorporeal artificial liver comprising at least one module including: a plasma component inlet port and a plasma component outlet port; a plasma component circulation chamber having the plasma component inlet port and the plasma component outlet port; and a hepatocyte culture chamber in which hepatocytes having an ammonia metabolizing ability are cultured, and which is disposed adjacent to the plasma component circulation chamber and isolated from the plasma component circulation chamber by a separation membrane that permeates ammonia but does not permeate hepatocytes.
