Abstract:
In an aspect, a mobile device includes a receiver for receiving wireless communication via at least one medium-range or shorter wireless communication modality. The receiver receives a plurality of location descriptor broadcasts from a respective plurality of beacon devices. For each unique location descriptor and for each modality by which it was received: a number of beacon devices broadcasting that descriptor via that modality is tallied; a modality-specific relevancy value indicative of a likelihood of mobile device presence at the described location is computed based on the tally; and a weighting factor associated with the modality is applied to the value. Using the resultant one or more weighted modality-specific relevancy values, a modality-independent relevancy value indicative of a likelihood of presence at the described location is computed. Based on the modality-independent relevancy value for each location, an indicator of a current location of the mobile device is automatically set.
