Provided are a fault category determination method and apparatus in a passive optical network (PON). The method comprises: receiving state information about all the optical network units (ONUs) reported by a passive optical network (PON) side device, all the ONUs being ONUs in the PON where the PON side device is located, wherein the state information comprises a power-down state and a non-power-down state; removing an ONU having a designated alarm information record in an alarm information list from all the ONUs, so as to obtain the remaining ONUs, wherein designated alarm information is fibrecut alarm information and power-down alarm information; and determining a fault category of the PON according to the state information corresponding to the remaining ONUs. The problem in the prior art that the category of a PON fault cannot be judged when the PON fails is solved, and the efficiency of a system processing a fault is improved.
