Abstract:
Fibrous silica having a thixotropy index of 6 or higher. The silica is obtained by sufficiently fibrillating/dispersing a siliceous fibrous mass into individual fibers and drying the fibers to obtain a siliceous fibrous mass not via an evaporation drying step, which is causative of silica fiber agglomeration. The process for fibrous silica production is a process for producing a siliceous fibrous mass through the decomposition of asbestos or asbestos-containing serpentinite with an acid and is characterized by comprising: a step in which pulverized asbestos or asbestos-containing serpentinite is introduced into a solution of an acid and decomposed with stirring; a step in which the silica obtained as a decomposition residue is taken out by filtration; a step in which the silica separated is cleaned; a step in which water is added to the cleaned silica to form a slurry solution having a concentration of 10-30% and the fibrous silica contained in the slurry is dispersed in the water by the ultrasonic diffusion method; and a step in which the dispersion containing the silica dispersed therein is dried with a spray dryer.
