Provided is a filler material for cooling towers, said filler material comprising a plurality of filler sheets layered together, each filler sheet having a plurality of protrusions. The filler material is disposed inside a cooling tower. In between the layers, source water is supplied from above and ambient air is supplied from the side, thereby bringing the source water in contact with ambient air and cooling said water. At least some of the plurality of protrusions are flattened protrusions, shaped like flattened circular truncated cones elongated in the direction of ambient air flow; this increases the force with which the source water supplied from above hits the protrusions, compared to the low force with which the ambient air hits said protrusions. Furthermore, since each flattened protrusion is a circular truncated cone and has no corners at either end in the long direction, less pressure is lost than would be with protrusions having corners. Consequently, the dwell time of the source water is increased despite the comparatively low loss of pressure, increasing droplet effects.
