Abstract:
A columnar filter of a honeycomb structure having a large number of through-holes longitudinally arranged through wall parts, wherein the through-holes comprise large volume through-holes having relatively larger areas in a cross section vertical to the longitudinal direction of the filter and small volume through-holes having relatively smaller areas in the cross section, and where the ratio of the length (a) of the wall part shared by the adjacent large volume through-holes to the length (b) of the wall part shared by the large volume through-hole and the adjacent small volume through-hole is &agr (a/b) and the ratio of the cross sectional area (A) of the large volume through-hole to the cross sectional area (B) of the small volume through-hole is β (A/B), the requirement of a relation expression β ≥ (20/9) &agr 2 + 1 (where 0 <&agr ≤ 1.5, 1 <β ≤ 6) is satisfied, whereby the filter having a low pressure loss when a specified amount of particulates is collected and a low pressure loss in an overall period up to the regeneration thereof can be provided.
