A pressure lever (49) by which a pressure roller (44) is rotatably supported is swingably connected to a fixing frame (48) by which a fixing roller (41) is rotatably supported, and through a drive gear (59), a sector gear (58), a pressure-contact adjustment lever (51), and a pressure-contact spring (57), the settings of a fixing pressure contact force mode are made to strong and light pressure contact modes by allowing a motor (61) to adjust the position of the swing of the pressure lever (49).  A control unit (14) sets the fixing pressure contact force mode to the strong pressure contact mode in order to improve a poor curling performance of the paper if the present environment of temperature/humidity is high temperature and high humidity according to the temperature/humidity detected by a temperature/humidity sensor (67) at the start of the fixing device immediately after the power is turned on, whereas the control unit sets the fixing pressure contact force mode to the light pressure contact mode in order to improve a poor fixing performance if the present environment of temperature/humidity is low temperature and low humidity at the start of the fixing device immediately after the power is turned on.  Thus, both good fixing performance and good curling performance of paper are achieved.
