Abstract:
A graft copolymer which has stimulus-responsive properties that render the copolymer usable as various functional materials and which is soluble in water at ordinary temperature, and a water-based coating composition containing the graft copolymer as a thickener. Provided is a flow modifier for water-based coating compositions, characterized by comprising a graft copolymer having a structure which comprises (A) a backbone formed from a monomer ingredient including an N-substituted (meth)acrylamide compound, the backbone having a lower critical aqueous-solution temperature of 40ºC or higher, and (B) a hydrophobic side chain.
