Title:
FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING WITH NON-LINEAR DAMPING
Document Type and Number:
WIPO Patent Application WO2003095852
Kind Code:
A3
Abstract:
A disc drive includes first and second fluid dynamic bearings (330, 324). The first bearing (320) has a larger bearing surface and narrower gap than the second bearing (324). The first bearing uses air or gas and the second bearing includes liquid in the gap. If a shock or other disturbance to the system occurs that tilts the bearing assembly, the resulting motion is both a tilting, and a motion which is axial. If a shock axially moves the hub assembly, only an axial motion occurs. Thus the system has non-linear behavior. Pursuant to this invention, when a tilting disturbance occurs, and some of it is dissipated in a net axial movement at a different frequency, energy is subtracted out of the system with motion that is not linearly related to the disturbance was that created it. According to an alternative disc drive the second fluid dynamic bearing is replaced by a magnetic bearing.
