Abstract:
[Problem] The purpose of the present invention is to provide a scintillator capable of detecting with high sensitivity hard X-ray, γ-ray, and other high energy photons. [Solution] A fluoride single crystal characterized by comprising a lutetium fluoride containing at least one type of element selected from Nd, Er, and Tm, and a scintillator characterized by comprising said fluoride single crystal are provided. The fluoride single crystal is obtained with a growth speed of vmax, indicated by the formula below, or less when: at least one element selected from Nd, Er, and Tm are added to a raw material mixture formed by mixing, for example, at least a lutetium fluoride and an alkali metal fluoride; the resultant mixture is melted to become a raw material melt; and the fluoride single crystal is grown from the raw material melt using the pulling up method. Vmax= α・R1/2/d1/3 (wherein α is 0.0062, R indicates the revolving speed (rpm) of the single crystal in relation to the raw material melt, and d indicates the average diameter (mm) of the single crystal.)
