Fluorinated pentacene derivatives, e.g., tetradecafluoropentacene, 5,6,7,12,13,14-hexafluoropentacene, 5,7,12,14-tetrafluoropentacene, and 6,13-difluoropentacene, which are novel compounds, and intermediates therefor. Also provided are processes for producing fluorinated pentacene derivatives and intermediates therefor. Such a pentacene derivative in which the pentacene skeleton has been fluorinated in desired positions is obtained by introducing oxo, hydroxy, or alkoxy groups into a pentacene skeleton, fluorinating the resultant compound with sulfur tetrafluoride, and then partially defluorinating it with a reducing agent.
