Abstract:

Liquid-crystalline compounds which have an extremeley high voltage retention, an extremely small temperature dependence of the retention, a low threshold voltage, and a large value of $g(D)n; a liquid-crystal composition containing any of the liquid-crystal compounds; and a liquid-crystal display element containing the liquid-crystal composition. The compounds are represented by general formula (1), wherein R represents C�1-20? alkyl, in which arbitrary non adjacent methylene groups (-CH�2?-) may have been replaced with oxygen atoms (-O-); Y�1? to Y�16? each independently represents hydrogen or fluorine, provided at least two of them are fluorine atoms and that at least two hydrogen atoms of each 1,4-phenylene group have not been replaced with fluorine atoms; X represents halogeno or C�1-20? alkyl in which arbitrary non adjacent methylene groups may have been replaced with oxygen atoms and any hydrogen has optionally been replaced with fluorine; and Z�1?, Z�2?, and Z�3? each independently represents -(CH�2?)�2?-, -(CH�2?)�4?-, -CH�2?O-, -OCH�2?-, -(CH�2?)�3?O-, -O(CH�2?)�3?- or a single bond; and each atom contained in this compound may have been replaced with an isotope thereof; provided when X is -OCF�2?CF�2?H, Z�1? and Z�3? are both single bonds, and Z�2? is -(CH�2?)�2?-, then none of Y�6?, Y�10?, and Y�12? is F, and none of Y�1? to Y�5?, Y�7? to Y�9?, Y�11?, and Y�13? to Y�16? is H; none of Y�2?, Y�10?, and Y�12? is F, and none of Y�1?, Y�3? to Y�9?, Y�11?, and Y�13? to Y�16? is H; or none of Y�2?, Y�4?, Y�10?, and Y�12? is F and none of Y�1?, Y�3?, Y�5? to Y�9?, Y�11?, and Y�13? to Y�16? is H.
