The present invention relates to a food composition for improvement of metabolic diseases and a pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases and, more specifically, to a food composition for improvement of metabolic diseases and a pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, containing 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-gamma-valerolactone or a derivative thereof as an active ingredient. The 5-(3',4'-dihydroxyphenyl)-gamma-valerolactone or the derivative thereof contained in the food composition for improvement of metabolic diseases and the pharmaceutical composition for prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases of the present invention reduces the expression of the transcription factor C/EBPα which is expressed during accumulation of fat and adipocytic differentiation, thereby exhibiting excellent effects in the prevention and treatment of at least one metabolic disease selected from obesity, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, hyperlipidemia, atherosclerosis or cardiovascular diseases.
