Abstract:
A food tray comprises a base, a wall extending from and surrounding the base, such that the wall surrounding the base forms an opening of the food tray. The wall has an extendable side wall having two opposite ends, a first side wall connected to one opposite end of the extendable side wall and a second side wall connected to the other opposite end of the extendable side wall. The extendable side wall is adapted to extend along a longitudinal axis in opposite directions from a retracted configuration to an extended configuration; such that the first side wall and the second side wall are adapted to be displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, such that the opening is widened when the first side wall and the second side wall are in the extended configuration. A food box comprises a food tray as described above and a lid adapted to cover the food tray.

Claims:
Claim

1. A food tray comprising:

a base,

a wall extending from and surrounding the base, wherein the wall surrounding the base forms an opening of the food tray, the wall comprising an extendable side wall having two opposite ends, a first side wall connected to one opposite end of the extendable side wall and a second side wall connected to the other opposite end of the extendable side wall;

wherein the extendable side wall is adapted to extend along a longitudinal axis in opposite directions from a retracted configuration to an extended configuration; wherein the first side wall and the second side wall are adapted to be displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, wherein the opening is widened when the first side wall and the second side wall are in the extended configuration.

2. The food tray of claim 1, wherein the extendable side wall comprise a pair of panels adapted to extend therefrom in the opposite directions and the pair of panels is connected to the first side wall and the second side wall respectively.

The food tray of claim 2, wherein the first side wall and the second side wall are pivotally connected to the base and adapted to rotate away from each other, wherein, in the extended configuration, the first side wall and the second side wall are rotated outwardly from the base, wherein the pair of panels of the extendable side wall is adapted to restrict the first side wall and the second side wall from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle.

The food tray of claim 2 or 3, wherein the extendable side wall is pivotally connected to the base, wherein the pair of panels is pivotally connected thereto and adapted to rotate with respect to the extendable side wall when in the extended configuration, wherein in the extended configuration, the extendable side wall is adapted to rotate outwardly from the base, wherein the pair of panels that is connected to the first side wall and the second side wall is adapted to restrict the extendable side wall from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle.

5. The food tray of any one of claims 2 to 4, wherein the pair of panels of the extendable side wall is adapted to extend from within the extendable side wall.

6. The food tray of any one of claims 2 to 5, wherein the pair of panels is adapted to engage the extendable side wall when in the extended configuration to restrict the extension of the pair of panels from extending beyond a pre-determined length.

7. The food tray of claim 6, wherein each of the pair of panels comprises engaging portions adapted to engage the extendable side wall when the pair of panels is in the extended configuration.

8. The food tray of claim 7, wherein the extendable side wall comprises corresponding stoppers for the engaging portions, wherein the engaging portions are adapted to engage the stoppers when the pair of panels is in the extended configuration.

The food tray of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the wall comprises another extendable side wall opposite the extendable side wall, wherein the first side wall and the second side wall are connected to the another extendable side wall, wherein the another extendable side wall is adapted to extend along the longitudinal axis in opposite directions when the first side wall and the second side wall are displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration.

10. The food tray of claim 9, wherein the another extendable side wall comprises another pair of panels adapted to extend in the opposite directions therefrom and the another pair of panels is connected to the first side wall and the second side wall respectively.

11. The food tray of claim 10, wherein the another pair of panels of the another extendable side wall is adapted to restrict the first side wall and the second side wall from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle.

The food tray of claim 10 or 11, wherein the another extendable side wall is pivotally connected to the base, wherein the another pair of panels is pivotally connected thereto and adapted to rotate with respect to the another extended side wall when in the extended configuration, wherein in the extended configuration, the another extendable side wall is adapted to rotate outwardly from the base, wherein the another pair of panels that is connected to the first side wall and the second side wall is adapted to restrict the another extendable side wall from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle.

13. The food tray of any one of claims 10 to 12, wherein the another pair of panels of the another extendable side wall is adapted to extend from within the another extendable side wall.

14. The food tray of any one of claims 10 to 13, wherein the another pair of panels is adapted to engage the another extendable side wall when in the extended configuration to restrict the extension of the another pair of panels from extending beyond a pre-determined length.

15. The food tray of claim 14, wherein the another pair of panels comprises engaging portions adapted to engage the another extendable side wall when the another pair of panels is in the extended configuration.

16. The food tray of claim 15, wherein the another extendable side wall comprises corresponding stoppers for the engaging portions, wherein the engaging portions are adapted to engage the stoppers when the pair of panels is in the extended configuration.

17. The food tray of any one of claims 1 to 16, wherein the base comprises a floor and a base wall extending from and surrounding the floor, wherein the wall extends from the base wall.

18. The food tray of any one of claims 1 to 17, wherein the food tray comprises a lid adapted to cover the opening.

19. The food tray of claim 18, wherein the lid is pivotally connected to the wall.

20. The food tray of any one of claims 1 to 19, further comprising a sleeve adapted to receive the food tray therein.

1. A food box comprising:

a food tray as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 20; and a lid adapted to cover the food tray.

Food Tray

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a food tray for containing food. For example, an expandable food tray, a disposable food tray, etc.

Background

[0002] It is common nowadays for food to be served or packed in disposable food containers. Typically, the food containers have a food tray and a lid to cover it. The food containers may have rigid side walls to contain the food therein and protect the food from being squashed easily. Some food containers may be tall to contain liquid or hold more food. For such containers, it is very difficult for a diner to scoop or pick up fine food, e.g. rice, from the bottom of the tray as the tall side walls restrict the movement of the elongated utensils e.g. fork, spoon, chopsticks, within the container. Naturally, the diner would prefer to have the food transferred to a plate so that the food can be picked up more easily. Also, the diner would have a more enjoyable experience and it is more presentable dining from a plate than a container. However, the food containers, due to the design limitations, are not able to provide a good dining experience.

[0003] The present invention aims to provide a solution to the abovementioned issues.

Summary

[0004] According to various embodiments, the present invention relates to a food tray having a base, a wall extending from and surrounding the base, such that the wall surrounding the base forms an opening of the food tray, the wall has an extendable side wall having two opposite ends, a first side wall connected to one opposite end of the extendable side wall and a second side wall connected to the other opposite end of the extendable side wall; such that the extendable side wall is adapted to extend along a longitudinal axis in opposite directions from a retracted configuration to an extended configuration; such that the first side wall and the second side wall are adapted to be displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, such that the opening is widened when the first side wall and the second side wall are in the extended configuration.

Detailed Description

[0039] In the following examples, reference will be made to the figures, in which identical features are designated with like numerals. [0040] Fig. 1 A shows a perspective view of an example of a food tray 100 for containing food. Food tray 100 as shown in Fig. 1A is in the retracted configuration. Food tray 100 has a base 110, a wall 120 extending from and surrounding the base 110, such that the wall 120 surrounding the base 110 forms an opening 102 of the food tray 100. Wall 120 has an extendable side wall 130 having two opposite ends 130A,130B, a first side wall 140 connected to one opposite end 130A of the extendable side wall 130 and a second side wall 150 connected to the other opposite end 130B of the extendable side wall 130. Base 110 may be a flat panel and may be a quadrilateral. Food tray 100 may be an open container for containing food.

[0041] Fig. 1B shows the food tray 100 in Fig. 1A in the extended configuration. Extendable side wall 130 is adapted to extend along a longitudinal axis 104 in opposite directions (as shown by the arrows) from a retracted configuration to an extended configuration. First side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 are adapted to be displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration, such that the opening 102 is widened when the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 are in the extended configuration. By displacing away from each other, at least the top edges 140T,150T of the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be displaced away from each other. Food tray 100 may be a disposable food tray 100. Food tray 100 may be made from a disposable material, e.g. paper, laminated paper, plastic.

First side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be connected to the another extendable side wall 160 at the opposite ends 160A,160B of the another extendable side wall 160. Referring to Fig. 1B, the another extendable side wall 160 may be adapted to extend along the longitudinal axis 104 in opposite directions when the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 are displaced away from each other during the extension from the retracted configuration to the extended configuration. Extendable side wall 130 and the another extendable side wall 160 may be directionally parallel to each other and may have the same width such that the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 that are connected to the extendable side wall 130 and the another extendable side wall 160 may be parallel to each other. As shown in Fig. 1B, the wall 120 may have a quadrilateral profile. While it is shown in Fig. 1B that the base 110 of the food tray 100 may be a quadrilateral, e.g. rectangular, square, profile. A skilled person will appreciate that the same configuration of the extendable side wall 130 with the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be applicable to food tray lOOs with more than four sides, e.g. a hexagonal profile, an octagonal profile, etc. Accordingly, the number of side walls may increase accordingly. It is preferable that there are an even number of side walls. At least one of the extendable side wall 130, the another extendable side wall 160, the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be a panel such that the surface of each wall may be a plane and may not be compressible along the longitudinal axis 104. Opening 102 may be formed by the top edges 130T,140T,150T,160T of the extendable side wall 130, the another extendable side wall 160, the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150. Top edges 130T,140T,150T,160T may extend along a plane.

[0043] As shown in Fig. 1B, when the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be displaced away from each other, the extendable side wall 130 may be extended. Similarly, the another extendable side wall 160 may also be extended. When the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 are fully displaced, the opening 102 becomes wider to allow a diner to be able to pick up food from the food tray 100 more easily as compared to convention a food tray with a rigid wall.

As shown in Fig. 1C, the extendable side wall 130 may be pivotally connected to the base 110. Similarly, the another extendable side wall 160 may be pivotally connected to the base 110. In the extended configuration as shown in Fig. 1C, the extendable side wall 130, the another extendable side wall 160, the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may lean outwardly from the base 110 to provide a wider opening 102 than the opening 102 of the food tray 100 as shown in Fig. 1A or Fig. 1B. Besides a wider opening 102, the angle of the wall 120 of the food tray 100 is gentler, i.e. the wall 120 has a gentler slope. In this configuration, the food tray 100 is similar to a plate. When dining from the food tray 100 in the extended configuration as shown in Fig. 1C, a diner would have an even better dining experience as it would be easier for the diner to use elongated utensils to reach and pick up food from within the food tray 100. In addition, as the angle between the base 110 and the wall 120 in the extended configuration are widened, i.e. obtuse angle, it is easier for the diner to scoop food from the food tray 100. Furthermore, the food tray 100 as shown in Fig. 1C resembles more of a plate than a box and is more presentable and elegant than a conventional food box or tray.

[0046] As shown in Fig. 1B, the extendable side wall 130 may include a pair of panels 132A,132B adapted to extend therefrom in the opposite directions and the pair of panels 132A,132B may be connected to the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 respectively. Pair of panels 132A,132B may be considered as part of the extendable side wall 130 such that when the extendable side wall 130 extends, the pair of panels 132A,132B may extend therefrom. Similarly, the another extendable side wall 160 may include another pair of panels 162A,162B adapted to extend in the opposite directions therefrom and the another pair of panels 162A,162B may be connected to the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 respectively. The another pair of panels 162A,162B may be considered as part of the another extendable side wall 160 such that when the another extendable side wall 160 extends, the another pair of panels 162A,162B may extend therefrom. Pair of panels 132A,132B may be pivotally connected to the extendable side wall 130 and adapted to rotate with respect thereto when they are in the extended configuration. Similarly, the another pair of panels 162A,162B may be pivotally connected to the another extendable side wall 160 and adapted to rotate with respect thereto when in the extended configuration.

[0047] As shown in Fig. 1C, the pair of panels 132A,132B and the another pair of panels 162A,162B, being rotatable, allow the extendable side wall 130, the another extendable side wall 160, the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 to rotate freely and therefore allowing them to be rotated outwardly from the base 110. In the extended configuration, the extendable side wall 130 may be adapted to rotate outwardly from the base 110. Similarly, the another extendable side wall 160 may be adapted to rotate outwardly from the base 110 such that both the extendable side wall 130 and the another extendable side wall 160 may be rotated away from each other. Pair of panels 132A,132B that is connected to the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be adapted to restrict the extendable side wall 130 from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle. Similarly, the another pair of panels 162A,162B that is connected to the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be adapted to restrict the another extendable side wall 160 from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle. Pair of panels 132A,132B of the extendable side wall 130 may be adapted to restrict the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle. As such, the wall 120 of the food tray 100 may be prevented from opening 102 all the way such as to be flat on a table or on the same plane as the base 110, so that the slight incline of the wall 120 may be suitable for food can be retained within the food tray 100 when the diner consumes the food from the food tray 100. As such, the food tray 100 as shown in Fig. 1C may be suitable for food that does not have a definite shape, e.g. rice, noodles. Similarly, the another pair of panels 162A,162B of the another extendable side wall 160 may be adapted to restrict the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle. The pre determined angle may be less than 180 degrees from the base 110, preferably in the range of 95-175 degrees, preferably, in the range of 100-170 degrees, preferably about 120 degrees. In the extended configuration, the opening 102 may be formed by the top edges 130T,140T,150T,160T of the extendable side wall 130, the another extendable side wall 160, the first side wall 140, the second side wall 150, the pair of panels 132A,132B and the another pair of panels 162A,162B.

[0048] Pair of panels 132A,132B of the extendable side wall 130 may be adapted to extend from within the extendable side wall 130. Similarly, the another pair of panels 162A,162B of the another extendable side wall 160 may be adapted to extend from within the another extendable side wall 160. As shown in Fig. 1B, the extendable side wall 130 may be a sleeve for receiving the pair of panels 132A,132B therein. The another extendable side wall 160 may also be a sleeve for receiving the another pair of panels 162A,162B therein. When the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 are being displaced away from each other, e.g. pulled apart by the diner, the pair of panels 132A,132B and/or the another pair of panels 162A,162B may be pulled out of the extendable side wall 130 and/or the another extendable side wall 160 thereby extending them. When the pair of panels 132A,132B and the another pair of panels 162A,162B are fully extended, the first side wall 140 and the second side wall 150 may be rotated to recline at an angle to the base 110. Thereafter, the extendable side wall 130 and the another extendable side wall 160 may be rotated to include at an angle to the base 110 thereby forming a plate-like food tray 100 as shown in Fig. 1C.

[0049] Fig. 2A shows a perspective view of an example of the food box 20 in the retracted configuration. Food box 20 may include a food tray 200 and a lid 22 adapted to cover the food tray 200. Food tray 200 may have the features of the food tray 100 as shown earlier. Food tray 200 may include the wall 220 extending from the base (not seen in Fig. 2A). Wall 220 may include the extendable side wall 230, the another extendable side wall (not shown in Fig. 2A), the first side wall 240 and the second side wall (not shown in Fig. 2A).

[0050] Fig. 2B shows a perspective view of the food tray 200 in Fig. 2A in the extended configuration. In Fig. 2B, the lid 22 of the food box 20 has been removed. Similar to the example in Fig. 1A-1C, the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 may be pulled away from each other by a diner. Food tray 200 may include a handle 242,252 on each of the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 for the diner to pull so that the diner need not pull them from the inner surfaces of the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 to prevent food contamination or prevent the hands from being dirtied.

[0051] First side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 may be pulled away from each other to widen the opening 202. When the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 are pulled away from each other, the extendable side wall 230 and the another extendable side wall 260 may be extended. As shown in Fig. 2B, the pair of panels 232A,232B and the another pair of panels 262A,262B may be pulled out from the extendable side wall 230 and the another extendable side wall 260 respectively by the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250. In the extended configuration, the pair of panels 232A,232B and the another pair of panels 262A,262B may be rotatable with respect to the extendable side wall 230 and the another extendable side wall 260 respectively. Extendable side wall 230 and the another extendable side wall 260 may be pulled away from each other to widen the opening 202 of the food tray 200. As both the extendable side wall 230 and the another extendable side wall 260 are being pulled apart, the pair of panels 232A,232B and the another pair of panels 262A,262B may be rotated towards the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250. The side walls 230,240,250,260 may be restricted from rotating beyond a pre-determined angle from the base due to the pair of panels 232A,232B and the another pair of panels 262A,262B that are connected to the side walls 230,240,250,260. As shown in Fig. 2B, the opening 202 of the food tray 200 in the extended configuration has been widened as compared with the opening 202 of the food tray 200 in Fig. 2A in the retracted configuration. Further, the wall 220 has been inclined outwardly to provide easier accessibility of the food therein by the diner.

[0052] Fig. 2C shows an elevation view of the food tray 200 in Fig. 2A. For explanation purpose, the pair of panels 232A,232B have been shown hidden within the extendable side wall 230. The following description for extendable side wall 230 is applicable to the another extendable side wall 260. As shown in Fig. 2C, the extendable side wall 230 may be in the retracted configuration where the pair of panels 232A,232B are retracted thereinto. As shown in Fig. 2C, each of the pair of panels 232A,232B may have a fan-shaped profile. Each of the pair of panels 232A,232B may have a V-shaped body with an arcuated top. Extendable side wall 230 may have a top edge 230T such that the top edge 230T may be disposed tangentially to the arcuated top of each of the pair of panels 232A,232B. When the first side wall 240 and the second side wall 250 rotate from the retracted position to the extended position, the pair of panels 232A,232B may glide along the top edge 230T of the extendable side wall 230.
